Ermias lives in Chicago and and grew up mostly with their mother's culture who is from Ethiopia before beginning to connect with Ermias' biological's father's half of the family an culture which is Puerto Rican. Ermias and Scarlett discuss growing up half Puerto Rican and the feeling of not fitting into just one cultural box. They also relate on how much Puerto Rican culture means to them and how upon reconnecting with the island of Puerto Rico allowed them to feel a sense of wholeness they had not felt before. Ermias wants to return to Puerto Rico after spending a difficult time during COVID in Carolina to study at UPR and is passionate about preserving about Afro-Latino culture saying, "Afro-Puerto Rican history is more than just slavery and Bomba".
